About their charity: Mercy University Hospital Foundation

We are an independent registered charity for The Mercy University Hospital in Cork. Our aim through fundraising is to help 'The Mercy' to build on its reputation for providing world class patient centred treatment and care.

Since we were established in 2007 we have raised funds and supported projects which have impacted on the lives of the 100,000 adults and children who are treated in the hospital every year.

As part of our 2011-2013 Plan under 'The Mercy Cancer Appeal' we want to raise €1.5 million for specific developments in the area of cancer care to include:

- Support for the development of 'An Early Cancer Diagnosis and Care Unit' for GI Cancers. This project includes an investment in the use of 'Radiofrequency Ablation' to dramatically improve outcomes for patients with oesophageal cancer. - Fund developments in the hospital's CT Scanning facilities by providing €1 million to develop a state of the art CT Diagnostics Centre. This new centre with two advanced CT scanners will benefit all patients requiring scans and in particular patients requiring scans for cancer, cardiac and neurologicial conditions. - The development of a 'Rapid Access Clinic' to provide a diagnosis and treatment of Testicular Cancer for men in the Munster area. This new clinic will provide a 'one stop shop' for men experiencing a diagnosis of testicular cancer. - Supporting the provision of an additional Oncology Nurse in St. Therese's Oncology Unit. We are eager to enhance nursing care of patients living with the experience of cancer and to support them through their cancer journey. Through our Annual Grants Programme we will continue to support areas identified as being in 'greatest need' within the hospital.
