Match Report - League Game

Mallow v Watergrasshill U11’s Wednesday April 18th 2012

An extraordinary finish to an extraordinary game on a very cold and wet evening in Mallow. The home team are a strong and well balanced group of players who are confident on the ball and they were never going to be easy to beat on their home turf. Even though Watergrasshill had many excellent goal chances from the start they made life difficult for themselves by conceding sloppy goals in the first half to finish 2 : 1 down at half time. Our goal coming from an og on the back of a good cross in across the goalmouth from James O Leary. We conceded a third goal 10 minutes into the second half by not dealing with a corner properly to go 3 : 1 down but this scoreline did not reflect the true ability of this team. Watergrasshill remained patient and continued to attack down both wings and were rewarded with a well taken goal by the excellent James O Leary to leave things at 3 : 2 to Mallow. Our boys started to really ramp up the pressure at this stage and Rob McKenna stepped up from central defence and drilled the ball through a sea of legs for our well deserved equaliser. Game on at 3:3 with 10 minutes to go and our lads to be fair had the fire in the belly and self belief to keep going. The defence as usual showed great composure at the back to deal with counter attacks by Mallow and our midfield worked really hard in support. In the final ten minutes Watergrasshill scored two great goals on the break, the first from Sean Desmond when he chipped the goalie and the final goal came from Daire O Leary with a trademark powerful finish.

Result : Mallow 3 Watergrasshill 5

There was outstanding perfomances from everyone in the squad but Man of the Match for the second week in a row goes to Shane O’Reilly for getting stuck in and never giving up.
