Apr 22nd – Under 11 v Avondale FC
U11’s Avondale FC v Watergrasshill Utd Sunday April 22nd 2012
Watergrasshill U11’s continued their winning run with a thrilling victory away to Avondale FC.
The pitch was in a very poor condition and both teams got off to a sluggish start. Watergrasshill lost Shane O Reilly because of a wrist injury after only a few minutes of play and still managed to create a lot of goal scoring chances in the first quarter hour. We then conceded a goal against the run of play and the score remained at 1 ; 0 nil down at half time despite winning a penalty for a handball.
Early in the second half Avondale were generously awarded a penalty but Rob McKenna who was outstanding in goals all day saved to keep us in the game. We continued to attack in search of an equaliser and we eventually pulled one back after great work and finishing by Sean Desmond to go level mid way through the second half. This game was very finely balanced all the way to the finish and Avondale fought hard to get the winner but our defence of Seamus Ahern, Ceadan Hogan and Ethan Nixon held strong as usual . The home side were awarded a second dubious penalty for an alleged foul but again Rob McKenna saved and our defence cleared the danger. Watergrasshill kept pushing up the pitch to keep the pressure on Avondale and right at the death Tim Hegarty headed in perfectly from an excellent cross from Sean Desmond to round off another great team effort.
This superb team can now head confidently into their last match of the season next weekend at home to Leeds FC knowing they have performed brilliantly all year.
Result : Avondale FC 1 Watergrasshill United 2 Man of the Match goes to the ever reliable and creative midfield play of our Captain Sean Desmond who showed great leadership today and was involved in all our attacks. It later emerged that Shane O Reilly unfortunately suffered a fractured wrist from his fall on the pitch and we wish him a speedy recovery .
