U10's Greenwood FC (4) vs Watergrasshill Utd (2) Sunday April 29th 2012
Under 10’s:
Yet another impressive performance by the team only to fall short of getting a result. The biggest factor in this game was the wind. Home advantage saw Greenwood play with the aid of very strong winds for 30 of the 45 mins.
WGH took the lead after a great passing move down the right hand side of the pitch with good interplay from Cormac Linehan and Ben Atkinson that saw James O’Leary loop a shot over the helpless Greenwood goalkeeper. The remainder of the first half saw Greenwood come close on a couple of occasions only to be thwarted by a combination of good defending and the cross bar. Ironically it was when WGH looked comfortable just before the break we conceded from a corner leaving the sides 1-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The start of the second 15 mins saw Greenwood get a superb goal from yet another corner. It turned to be their only effort on goal in that 15minute period. This was a set-back but with the aid of the wind at our back WGH drove on and where very unlucky to see 3 shots hit the cross bar and a couple of others just miss the target. Ben Atkinson and James O’Leary being prominent throughout with some solid defensive work being done by Gary Doyle, James Barry & Kieran McCarthy. Unluckily we finished the second period 2 -1 down.
The last 15 mins saw Sean O’Driscoll put in huge performance for the team. Against the wind WGH had Greenwood under serious pressure with some great passages of play that saw Kieran McCarthy get a run on goal only to have his shot saved .
Finally we got the break we deserved. Sean O Driscoll’s tireless work was rewarded when he scored a brilliant second goal for WGH with a well directed shot that flew into the top corner of the net. It was 2-2 and game on.
Greenwood were awarded a penalty. It was very harsh but as luck would have it, the resulting penalty was hit wide.
Unfortunately with only a couple of minutes to go WGH were undone by yet another corner only to be followed by another goal soon after.
Team: Ben Atkinson, Ciaran Hurley, Keelan O’Sullivan, Chris O’Mahony, Kieran McCarthy, Cormac Linehan, Sean O’Driscoll, Gary Doyle, James Barry, Liam O’Keeffe & James O’Leary
