October 29th – U14 WGH Utd (3) v (2) Riverstown
On a chilly morning at Skehanagh Park, our U14's hosted Riverstown in the league. We got off to a nice start with a beautiful passing combination which unfortunately resulted in nothing. We then conceded a corner and some sloppy defending led to Riverstown breaking the deadlock inside 5 minutes. The next ten minutes saw us up the tempo and the lads really pushed on and afforded Riverstown very little time on the ball. However, Riverstown had one burst down the wing and made it count with long range effort nestling in the top corner. For the last 15mins of the first half we continued to outplay Riverstown and created a plethora of chances but could find the net. Half time finished 0-2.
The second half started much the same as the first half ended. We continued to play the better football and finally our hard effort was rewarded as Adam scrambled the ball over the line and pulled one back for the Hill. Our equaliser came shortly afterwards as Adam played a through-ball to Dan, who had the awareness to realise he was offside, and let the ball run past him. James capitalised on this and scored with a composed finish while one on one with the keeper.
Substitutions played a key role in allowing us to score the winner. Colin played in front of the back four when introduced and allowed James and Adam to push on up the pitch. With 10mins remaining, Adam scored our third, and his second, and wrapped up the three points for us. The last ten minutes saw us defend masterfully, although we did have a last minute goal line clearance from Jason to ensure we picked up all three points.
All in all it was a hard fought victory and the lads showed great heart and determination to battle back from a two goal deficit, in trying circumstances to say the least. Final result : WGH 3 - Riverstown 2. Thanks to all the parents for their continued support on the sidelines and to all the players for a great turnout again. Next game is away to St. Mary's next Saturday with a 12.45pm kick off.
