Dec 17th – Watergrasshill United U12 vs. Everton Match Report

U12’s Match Report WGH v Everton Saturday Dec 15th 2012

This was a case of a game that we expected to win , and could have won , but did not win because of the team making some basic mistakes in the first half , that they did not recover from. Everton are a good team, but not any better than us and this showed in the first 15 minutes when WGH were doing all the attacking but the end product did not results in any goals.

The tone of the game changed very quickly when WGH failed to clear two corners in a row and on each occasion the ball just dropped into a crowded penalty area and was stabbed into the net from close range. We were now seriously on the back foot and we then conceded a third goal just before half time to be 0 : 3 down at the break.

To be fair to our lads they never lie down and take the punishment easily and our second half was a much more confident performance. We had some good chances to come back at them but we we still ended up losing the match 1 : 5 . We conceded yet another unnecessary goal from a corner and Sean Desmond got his head on to the end of a James O leary free kick for our consolation goal.

This game was a harsh lesson for our squad about how quickly a game can turn against you but overall I am proud of the way WGH kept at it all the way to the final whistle . It is good to see how some players respond positively to being down in a match and I should compliment Colm Curtin for being very brave in coming off his line many times in our goals. Seamus Ahern playing at right full back got us out of jail a few times in what was otherwise not a great day for the back four. Our best performance came from Shane O Reilly who toiled endlessly at midfield and never shirked from any tackles from a physically tough Everton side.

In the end we can have no complaints about the scoreline or the result , so well done to Everton and we look forward to having another go at them in 2013.
