April 20th – U14’s Good Form Continues

On a crisp April morning, our U14's hosted Everton in the league at Skehanagh Park. Having secured a great point in the reverse fixture only two weeks ago, we knew this was going to be a close game.

The game started relatively slowly with both teams cagey with their play. It was Watergrasshill who had the first chance on goal but the shot was dragged just wide. Sloppy play from The Hill led to Everton opening the score, with their forward tapping it in after a good save from Tom in goal. The remainder of the half saw the game played largely in midfield with few opportunities from either side, with Seamus, Kieran and Pearse preventing the Everton lads from pushing on.

Watergrasshill started the second half and the pep talk at half time clearly had an effect. The lads were much more focused and made more intelligent use of the ball. The Hill put Everton under huge pressure for the first 10 mins and had a few decent shots go just over the bar. Finally, Greg gave us our equaliser with  fantastic effort to lob the keeper.

The Hill pushed on and continued to press for the winner which, at times, left us open at the back. However, Luke had a man of the match performance for the entire game and proved to be solid in defence, breaking up almost all attacks from Everton and was assisted by solid performances from Conor, Adam and Jason aswell.

With ten minutes to go, James was fouled about 30 yards from goal. The resulting free kick led to a corner and Dan Dennehy swung the ball into the box. After a scramble near the goal, Chris scored our winner with a half-volley on the turn that went a yard over the line and was correctly given by the referee.

The final few minutes saw the lads defend brilliantly and fight to keep onto their lead with Dan McCarthy, Karl, Andrew and Darren tightening things up in midfield and defense. The game ended 2-1 to Watergrasshill.

This was another fantastic result for the lads, who have shown great team spirit and determination in the last few games, earning some very impressive results. With 6 games left in the league and another cup up for grabs, the remainder of the season looks bright.

Thanks to all the players and parents for their efforts and support today. Thanks also to Derry and Chris on the line who ensured all 16 players got game time. Training continues this Tuesday at 7pm at Skehanagh Park.
