U14’s Denied a Draw Late On

On Saturday 4th May, our u14's hosted table-toppers Castleview in what was going to be a very tough game from the word go. Castleview started the stronger of the two and raced to an early lead. The first half saw more of the same as Castleview dominated the game and had several chances to increase their advantage that were fortunately snuffed out by our defense.

A few tactical changes and a pep talk led to WGH starting the second half the better of the two teams. We had one or two great opportunities to level things up but they went agonisingly wide and just over the bar. The equaliser came with 15 minutes to go as James ran onto a great pass and slotted past the Castleview keeper.

With five minutes to go, the game looked set to go for a draw, despite our lads battering the Castleview defense in search of a winner. However, Castleview lobbed a high ball over the top which headed for the Castleview  sideline. The ball looked to be clearly over the line and our player picked up the ball to take his throw, only to have a free kick awarded against him for handball.

The resulting free kick was delivered into the box, and after a scramble, was poked home for the winner. The game ended 2-1 to Castleview, with WGH being denied a well deserved draw in the cruelest of fashions.

Despite the dissappointing result, all credit must go to the lads for what was a fantastic second half performance. Considering we lost the reverse fixture 6-1 before Christmas, it is a testament to the coaches and players alike for the progress that has been made since then. The form and team spirit in the last few fixtures have been brilliant and the positives from today's game will set us up nicely for the remaining league and cup fixtures.

Attention turns to St Mary's at home on Tuesday(7pm Kick Off) where a win will gaurantee our place in Division 2 next year. Thanks to all parents and players for their support today.

Note: Squad rotation will continue for the remainder of the season and to help with this, a friendly has been provisionally organised for next weekend. Confirmation of details to follow mid-week. Again, thanks to all for their understanding of this scenario.
