Watergrasshill Utd vs St Mary's

WGH continued their unbeaten start to the season with a draw against St Mary's who were promoted to Division 2 this year.

With three players unavailable for selection our normal line up had to be adjusted somewhat. WGH however started well and went 1 up after 10 minutes with a brilliantly taken goal from Ethan Nixon who raced up the left wing and unleashed a powerful shot from his left foot that swerved perfectly to beat the St Mary's goalkeeper at his near post.

St Mary's fought back with two goals in quick succession leaving the home side a goal down with 20 minutes gone in the first half. Watergrasshill continued to press and we had many chances to score with good supply coming in from Sean Desmond on the right wing. Aidan Barton and Harry Buscievich worked hard to get themselves into good attacking positions and they were both unlucky not to score themselves. About 5 minutes before the interval Ethan Nixon created the equaliser with a low powerful shot which was not dealth with adequately by the St Mary's defence and his shot eventually crossed the line and we were back level at 2 ; 2 at half time.

WGH did not concede in the second half with a typically robust performance from Shane O Reilly at central midfield and a measured and assured display by Eoin Griffin playing at right full back. Again just like the first half WGH had most of the chances and Harry Buscievich , Aidan Barton Shane O Reilly and Sean Desmond all created good opportunities to win the game. In the end it was not to be , even Ethan Nixon was denied what would have been a well deserved hat trick when his shot late on hit the cross bar.

Result : Watergrasshill (2) St Mary's (2)

All in all a reasonable day's work and we can look forward to our next match on Saturday November 2nd with confidence and determination.

Finally congrats to James O leary and Gary Doyle who have been selected ( through the U12 managers ) to go forward to represent the club at the Cork Development Squad trials today and also to wish Sean Desmond the best as he continues to represent the squad so capably.

Man of the Match goes to Ethan Nixon for his skill and vision on the pitch and for his two well taken goals . Well done Ethan.
