U11A faced their toughest challenge yet

U11a_15Nov2014

Our U11a's faced their toughest challenge yet earlier today against an unbeaten Corkbeg. On a wet and muddy Skehanagh, the lads had to work hard to keep a well passing and moving Corkbeg at bay. Eoin, Garreth and Denis, helped by Sam, were in control at the back and mostly snuffed out the Corkbeg attacks when they managed to break through a very hardworking midfield of Eoghan, Eimantas and Jack. We didn't give away a lot of chances but it was a a Corkbeg corner kick in the 19th minute that put us behind. The lads, didn't put their heads down and equalised only a minute later when Denis was at the receiving end of our own set piece. Half time score: Watergrasshill United U11a (1) - Corkbeg (1).

In the second half we changed our game plan and moved Daniel, who replaced Jim earlier in the first half, to left mid and introduced Tim up front and Caolan came in for Eimantas as centre mid. An unlucky own goal from one of our defenders in the 2nd minute meant our game plan went out the window. We had to up our game. We kept pressing and pressing and in the second half had probably more of the ball. With attack in our minds, we took our eyes of the ball for one moment. A moment that Corkbeg used to score the 1-3. Timmy Sexton brought us back in the game, by scoring a few minutes later from another set piece. Corkbeg had a few chances too but some superb keeping by Ben kept them at bay. Another corner kick from Sam almost gave us the equaliser, but the referee spotted the unlucky hand ball, and rightfully disallowed the goal. In the last 10 minutes, we took a gamble, and put a slightly injured Daniel in goal and put Ben on the left wing. We introduced David for Caolan and tried to enforce the equaliser. The last ten minutes were nerve jangling as we kept on pressing but Corkbeg's solid defence didn't give anything away. The lads, tried and tried but unfortunately, Corkbeg held on and went home with the win. A great game of football between two teams who gave it their all in the quest for victory. Final Score: Watergrasshill United U11a (2) - Corkbeg (3).
