Good first week of the season for the Junior team
Our Junior’s season started off with three league games bring played in the opening week.
Watergrasshill Utd 7 – 1 Knockraha
Last Sunday saw a comprehensive opening day victory over near neighbours Knockraha. Only four minutes in and the returning Peter Heavey opened the scoring after showing his battling skills in the box and this was shortly followed up with a fine Kyle Cronin strike. Knockraha pulled one back but a penalty by new captain JP Buckley and another from the ever tricky Cronin put us deservedly 4-1 up at the break. Knockraha simply could not deal with our attacking play and chances were created every time the ball went forward.
The intensity went down a little in the second period but with Liam Keane and Dan O Connell dominant at the back, further goals followed from Mossie Keane - a 25 yard effort, a header from Ray Murphy and then a low strike by Cormac Galvin rounded off the perfect start to the season.
Southcoast 2 – 1 Watergrasshill Utd
Thursday evening saw a tough away game against a physically strong Southcoast team in Shanbally. After a few similar scares in the opening half, Southcoast scored from a deep cross to the back post. They went 2-0 up before Kyle Cronin pulled one back in the second half. Good performances from Eric Duncan and Chris Prendergast were not enough to avoid defeat in a tight game.
Watergrasshill Utd 2 – 1 Greenwood B
Yesterday we got back to winning ways with a scoreline that suggested the game was much closer than it actually was. Dan Hollywood and JP Buckley had gotten in behind their defence a few times before Peter Heavey gave the keeper no chance with a precise free kick. Peter was soon forced off with injury and replaced by Johnny Dorgan who burst through to give a comfortable half time lead. The game should have been killed off early in the second half but once Greenwood pulled one back with 20 minutes to go, it meant a nervous few minutes to endure. However we held firm and ended up deserving winners on the day.
