Our Girl's Academy played their first competitive league game earlier today since the formation of Watergrasshill United, back in 2004.

As always, bursting with enthuasim, with had a very young squad of 16 for an under 12 competitive game (many players were 8 & 9 year olds) but could only start 9, but we did ensure everyone got match time.

We had stated last Thursday, at our first training session of the season, that this year's league games are not about results but building for the future.

The Club has vast experience of days like today, where a squad ventures into the unknown with their first league game, but the more this squad plays, the better, confident and stronger they will become.

We started with a 1-4-3-1 formation and kept this throughout the game, occassionally pushing one defender into help the midfield 3.

We were up against a well established Carrigaline team consisting of many 11 year olds but for the first half played & defended well.

No doubt the half hour per half & pitch size took it's toll on us in the second half but for a team on their first competitive outing we learned quickly what the "off side" rule is in soccer and with some quiet coaching words (!!!) of encouragement from the line caught Carrigaline out on many many occassions..

As a squad we certainly do not lack confidence & despite losing today every player walked out the gate with a smile, what sport is all about.

We'll like to mention a special thanks to the Carrigaline coaches and the referee Sean for a very sporting fixture.

We'd also like to thank Dean Roche for the superb condition of the pitch and indeed the grounds today. Carrigaline travelled with large support and many complimentary comments were paid to us on our facilities.
